PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION FAQS

“I was told that I shouldn’t consume my placenta.”

The reality is, placenta encapsulation and consumption isn’t standard practice and it never will be – so care providers are confused by it, and often want to discourage you from consuming your placenta.

I’d be doing you a disservice if I told you placenta consumption was for everyone and that there are absolutely no contraindications. It is also impossible to predict how your birth will go, and if it will allow for your placenta to be saved for consumption.

I am dedicated to maintaining IPPA's Standards of Practice by creating a safe, quality placenta service for you. I am trained and up to date on my OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Food Safety training.

  • Supporters of the practice say that placenta pills can help prevent anemia, boost milk supply, balance hormones and even lower your chances of having postpartum depression.

    • Higher energy levels

    • Lesser chance of baby blues

    • Lesser chance of postpartum depression

    • Balanced mood and hormones

    • Increased milk supply

    • Enhanced bonding experience with baby

    • Higher iron levels

    • Reduced postnatal bleeding

    • Uterus returning back to pre-pregnancy size faster

  • The placenta is rinsed, veins are cut and excess blood is drained. It is then steamed at a high enough temperature to remove any and all bacteria. Steamed placenta is then cut into strips, and placed in a dehydrator for 12 hours. The dehydrated strips are then blended into a fine powder, and placed in individual capsules.

The process does take place in my home, where every surface is bleached and sanitized before and after. All supplies used are either disposable or are washed, bleached, and steam sanitized after each use. I never process more than one placenta at a time, as to avoid cross contamination.

  • Yes, all hospitals will release you your placenta. Once you are admitted, tell your nurse you are keeping your placenta. They will have you sign a release form. They will put your placenta in a container (which they provide) and I will then come and pick it up.

***Make sure you are well informed to your rights to your placenta. If for some reason the hospital is giving you a reason you cannot take your placenta, please contact me. It helps if your OBGYN/Care Provider is in the loop on your wishes to keep your placenta. They can make sure to approve the release of your placenta. If your care provider informs you they would like to take your placenta to pathology, ask them to take a small piece of the placenta instead of the entire thing. It is illegal in all 50 states to deny a patient their right to take their placenta home.

  • I am not a medical professional and cannot advise a ‘proper’ dosage. However, mothers have found success taking 1-2 pills a day for the first 3 days, then up to 2-3 pills a day until you are done with them.

  • Your placenta pills are good up to 1 year in the fridge, YEARS in the freezer.
