Frequently asked questions

What is a doula?

In short - I’m your fairy Godmother for all things new baby. I am your emotional, physical, and mental support throughout your pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartum period. I am trained, educated, prepared and ecstatic to answer any questions you may have and get you through this amazing transition of life, side by side!

What are the benefits of having a doula?

Families who have chosen to hire a doula have reported overall feeling more comfortable and confident during their labor/delivery, and many experience a shorter labor. They also have a significantly reduced chance of c-section or use of interventions like Pitocin, are 60% less likely to ask for an epidural, and see a lowered amount of financial cost at the end of birth. If you have questions about any of the aforementioned, please reach out - I’d love to chat!

Is a Doula the same thing as a Midwife?

Although we both play important roles on the birth team, we serve two very different purposes. A midwife oversees the medical and clinical care of the pregnant mother and baby, while a doula provides emotional and physical support to the family. It is important to remember that a doula does NOT provide clinical/medical care.

My partner will be with me while I give birth…. why do I still need a doula?

My role is never to replace anyone on your birth team, but rather amplify the support they’re already giving. Many times, the doula will support your partner while THEY support you. Your partner knows you better than anyone else. Even if they aren't sure how to support you in labor/birth, they know your fears, preferences and desires. I work with your partner by encouraging them, offering guidance and suggestions when needed, and ensuring their physical health is taken care of as well. (hydration, eating, resting, etc.).

I’m being induced or having a cesarean section. How can you help me?

Birth demands support, no matter the avenue it took to get there. Hospital births look no different in terms of doula support, whether you’ve been induced or have had a natural onset of labor. We will work together to make informed choices regarding your birth and hospital procedures, utilize pain management techniques and coping skills, and I will serve as an extra set of eyes, ears, and knowledge to things that may arise. At cesarean births, whether they are planned or not, doulas are useful to help with c-section birth preparedness, balancing emotions and thoughts, and keeping you informed of the options you still have in the operating room, as well as supporting your partner during this time.
